Angel Oak walking like an Egyptian
Article written by Dianne Tennyson and Bunnie Summmers about their students
Sixth-grade students at Angel Oak Elementary School on John’s Island recently immersed themselves in studying ancient Egypt- tight down to the authentic headgear and eyeliner.
Angel Oak is one of only a handful of elementary schools in Charleston County that still has the sixth grade linked directly to the elementary level. Principal Annette Sausser has tried to build an enriched “magnet school” environment for the sixth-graders.
During the Egypt project, the classes created the bomb on an ancient pharaoh. A life-size mummy was placed inside a realistic tomb decorated with artwork of the Egyptian gods, ancient drawings and hieroglyphics.
When all the work was done, the sixth-grade students dressed up as prominent Egyptians and gave guided tours to the younger Angel Oak students.
